How to Apply for SAPS 2026/2027: The Step-by-Step Guide
The SAPS online application for the 2026/2027 intake (reference TRA26/27) runs from 21 October to 13 November 2026. There are 5,500 police trainee posts on the table and the whole thing happens on the SAPS e-recruitment portal at erecruitment.saps.gov.za. No paper forms, no walk-ins, no fees.
Here's the full process, step by step — written so you can follow it with the portal open in another tab.
Step 1: Get your documents ready before you touch the portal
Do this first, not last. Digging through drawers mid-application is how sessions expire and details get mistyped.
You'll need:
- your South African ID (certified copy, and keep the original handy for the number)
- your Grade 12 certificate or statement of results
- proof of residence
- a working email address and a cellphone number that can receive SMS
Scan or photograph each document clearly. Blurry uploads are one of the quiet reasons applications get flagged, so check every image before you submit it. Our SAPS requirements and documents checklist goes deeper on certifications, formats, and the mistakes that disqualify people.
Step 2: Register on the SAPS e-recruitment portal
Go to erecruitment.saps.gov.za. First-time users need to register — this is the SAPS portal registration everyone asks about. You'll enter your ID number, personal details, and a password. That account is your saps login for this intake and every future one, so choose a password you'll remember and store it somewhere safe.
Use an email address you check daily. SAPS sends shortlist notifications and stage updates through the portal and email, and a dead inbox means missed chances.
One account per person. SAPS allows one application per person per intake. Creating extra profiles doesn't give you extra chances — it gives you duplicates, and duplicates get thrown out. Register once, carefully.
Step 3: Complete the online application form
Log in and open the application for reference TRA26/27. The form walks you through:
- Personal details — name, ID number, contact details. Match your ID exactly; typos here cause real problems later.
- Education — your Grade 12 details and any further qualifications.
- Languages — you need English plus one other official language. Be honest about fluency; it's tested.
- Work history — include what you have, even part-time or volunteer work. Gaps are fine; lies are not.
- Documents — upload each required file when prompted.
Work through every section in order. The portal won't accept a half-finished application, which is actually doing you a favour — nothing slips through incomplete.
Step 4: Review everything, then submit
Before you hit submit, read the whole form back. Check:
- your ID number, digit by digit
- spelling of your name against your ID
- your phone number and email (one wrong digit and SAPS can't reach you)
- every upload actually attached and readable
Then submit — well before 13 November 2026. The closing date is a hard cut. Portals slow down under last-day traffic, sessions time out, and "I was still uploading" doesn't reopen a closed intake. Aim to be done a full week early.
Step 5: Save your confirmation and watch your inbox
After submitting, save or screenshot your confirmation. Note your application reference if the portal gives you one. Then check your email and your saps login regularly. Shortlisting happens after the closing date, and SAPS contacts successful candidates directly.
Silence for weeks is normal. The pipeline — sifting, fitness assessments, medicals, background checks — runs for months. Our guide on what happens after you apply lays out the realistic timeline and what each stage actually checks.
Portal problems? Common fixes
- Session keeps expiring: work in one sitting on a stable connection; don't leave the form open for hours.
- Uploads failing: check file size and format, and try a clear PDF or JPG instead of a phone photo.
- Can't log in: use the portal's password reset with the exact email you registered with. If you registered with a typo'd email, that's a bigger problem — double-check at registration.
- Page won't load on closing week: try early morning or late evening when traffic dips.
The one rule that matters most
The SAPS application is free and it lives only on erecruitment.saps.gov.za. Anyone offering to "fast-track" your form for a fee, selling application forms on WhatsApp, or promising you a trainee post is running a scam. Full details in our SAPS application scams guide.
You have until 13 November 2026. Get your documents together today, register this week, and submit early. The 5,500 posts are real — and so is the competition: the previous intake drew 1,049,998 applications. Make yours count.
